Peptides are special substances in the body that play a crucial role in building proteins, forming hormones, and regulating various processes, including cell regeneration and gene management. They are composed of amino acids linked together in a specific peptide chain. The properties of each type of peptide are determined by the amino acids it contains and their sequence. Peptides consisting of up to 10 amino acids are called oligopeptides (short peptides), while those with 20-50 amino acids or more are called polypeptides.

The human body naturally synthesizes 12 types of amino acids. However, in the molecules of peptides, eight additional amino acids are found that are not produced naturally in our bodies. These are known as “essential” amino acids. They are extremely important for the body and must be obtained through dietary sources.

To ensure that everything functions properly in the body and to prevent a deficiency of these components, one’s diet should consist of high-quality protein-rich foods. The value of such nutrition lies not in the quantity of protein but in its quality, which is determined by its amino acid composition.

Foods Rich in Peptides

Many animal-based products are rich in complete amino acids or peptides ready for digestion. These include:

  • Dairy products
  • Lean meats (such as chicken breast)
  • Fish and seafood
  • Eggs

For those following a vegetarian diet, several plant-based foods also contain essential amino acids, although the quality may vary. To meet their protein needs, vegetarians should diversify their diet by incorporating protein-rich foods.

Sources of peptides include:

  • Legumes and grains
  • Vegetables and mushrooms (spinach and radishes are peptide leaders)
  • Dark chocolate, berries, walnuts, and bananas (known for their endorphin-rich peptide content)

Despite the availability of these foods, individuals often experience protein deficiencies due to poor dietary choices, irregular meal schedules, and fast-food snacking. Additionally, excessive cooking can negatively impact the quality and composition of many food items. Some studies suggest that peptides from plant-based sources might be less efficiently absorbed than those from animal products.

To ensure your body gets an adequate supply of peptides, make sure to regularly consume these foods, giving preference to high-quality, natural products.

How Peptides Are Synthesized in the Body

In the human body, natural peptide synthesis occurs rapidly within minutes. However, synthesizing peptides from dietary sources is a complex, multi-step process. When food proteins enter the stomach, they begin to break down under the influence of the enzyme pepsin and gastric juices. This initial breakdown splits the large protein molecules, composed of numerous amino acids, into smaller peptide bonds.

This initial process is just the beginning of peptide synthesis. The partially digested proteins then move into the early stages of the intestine, where they undergo further decomposition into polypeptides. However, most of these proteins are further broken down into shorter peptides, like dipeptides and tripeptides.

In the final stage, these short peptides are absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to various cells throughout the body. Some amino acids are used for creating specific proteins, such as myosin and actin in muscles, or hemoglobin in red blood cells. Others are utilized in the synthesis of hormones, blood components, enzymes, and more. Some amino acids are converted into energy or serve as building blocks for other amino acids.

Every cell has a unique role, creating specific proteins. For instance, muscles produce myosin and actin, while red blood cells generate hemoglobin, and so on.

By consuming a balanced diet rich in the right foods, you can ensure your body receives an adequate supply of peptides and amino acids to support these essential processes.
